LANtastic Network Operating System Version 5 Compatibility Bulletin
Product Reviewed: MaynStream for DOS v3.1
Classification: Tape Backup Software
Date: 03/15/1993
Engineer: JHC
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Compatibility Statement:
Maynard MaynStream for DOS v3.1 is compatible with LANtastic
versions 4.xx and 5.xx (with the exclusion of the isleLAN feature).
Product Overview:
The Maynard family of tape backup systems are designed for fast
reliable backup storage of local and network hard disk drives.
Tests were conducted using a Maynard 525Q (525 MB) tape drive and
Maynard 16 bit SCSI interface card. The tape backup software can
only be used on the machine where the tape drive has been
installed, therefore, to backup a disk drive on another machine in
the network (redirected drive) requires that the remote PC must be
running the LANtastic SERVER program.
Installing MaynStream for DOS:
The installation of the MaynStream backup software is accomplished
from floppy disks. At the PC where the tape drive is installed,
insert MaynStream installation disk #1 in the drive and from the
floppy prompt type:
INSTALL <Destination Drive:\Directory>
Where "Destination Drive and Directory" is the desired location for
the tape backup software (e.g. "C:\MAYNARD"). Be sure to answer
"No" to the isleLAN network stations question since this option is
redundant to and incompatible with LANtastic.
Configuration:
After successful installation, perform the following steps to
complete the configuration:
Add the following statement to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
Set msii=<Destination Drive:\Directory>
Configure your backup requirements using the interactive menu
program TMENU. Some recommended configuration settings are:
Main Menu Selection ....: Configuration
Sub Menu Selection .....: H/W Options
Network Type
Configuration Selection : [3] IBM PC Network
Main Menu Selection ....: Configuration
Sub Menu Selection .....: H/W Options
Network Options
Configuration Selection : Skip OPEN files [Y]
Create the SKIPPED script [Y]
Main Menu Selection ....: Configuration
Sub Menu Selection .....: Catalog Options
Configuration Selection : Set catalog level [F] (full)
Note that running the DOS file locking program SHARE is required in
order for the tape backup software to detect open files and create
the SKIPPED script. SHARE should be run on any LANtastic server
which will be backed up across the network.
Tape Backup Operation:
There are three operational modes supported by MaynStream software.
The interactive mode provided by TMENU, command line mode and the
automatic mode provided by AUTOBACK and AUTORES.
Interactive:
TMENU is the interactive program used to back up local and
redirected drives. Redirected drives are listed as "local drives"
by TMENU.
To backup a disk drive located on a remote system from a LANtastic
workstation, perform the following steps:
Net Login \\<Server Name> <Username> <Password>
Net Use <Available Drive Letter>: \\<Server Name>\<Drive Name>
TMENU (backup redirected drive to tape)
Net Unuse <Available Drive Letter>:
Command Line:
Command line mode is for advanced users and is fully described in
Chapter 5 of the MaynStream DOS users guide.
Automatic:
To automatically backup disks at a prearranged time, create backup
scripts using TMENU, then schedule the backups using AUTOBACK.
AUTORES is a small TSR (terminate and stay resident) program that
initiates backups at the scheduled time. It is recommended by
Maynard that AUTORES be the last TSR loaded and therefore is
started after the LANtastic network. To avoid any LANtastic pop up
message interaction problems with AUTORES, add the following
command after system start up:
NET Message/Disable POP
Also, automatic backups will not begin if ALONE is running on the
system
where the tape unit is installed.
Open File Conflicts:
During the backup process, any open files are bypassed but are
noted in a status log (msii.prt) and in the Skipped script. At the
termination of the backup session, the user may optionally review
the log to determine which, if any, files were omitted from the
backup.
Prior to backing up a disk drive containing the LANtastic control
directory, save the contents of the directory in a backup file by
entering the command:
NET_MGR Backup C:\LANtasti.net <backup file name>
This can only be done without SERVER loaded.
During the backup procedure, LANtasti.net control directory files
remain open and therefore are skipped unless specifically excluded
from the backup file selection.
Network Disconnects:
If there is a network disconnect during a backup procedure, the
error message "Unrecoverable Error on Drive. A(bort), R(etry),
F(ail)" is displayed. When the connection is re-established, the
current file being backed up will be flagged as corrupt.
